| My Favorite Band
I have been a fan of Marillion since the early
80's and came across their music by chance when visiting a Dallas
music store. I was looking for a Genesis LP and the sales guy
recommended I'd listen to this new Band, Marillion. I was
hooked form the first album on and only took a brief hiatus when
their lead singer (Fish) went Solo and was replaced by Steve
Hogarth. When he arrived I listed to their new album only once
and missing Fish I refused to listen to it again for some time.
Finally, I listened to it again and in retro respect that was one of
their finest albums.
I was lucky to experience them live in
Chicago in 2005, one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
One of these years I will make the trip to Europe and attend one of
their Marillion Weekends, an annual event the band sets up for their
fans.
Their music is difficult to categorize but
generally is labeled Progressive Rock, music to listen to and not
for dancing. With Fish, most people would say they sounded a
bit like Genesis (Peter Gabriel years) and I agree with that to an
extent. Having been a huge Genesis fan for years I would trade
them for Marillion in a heartbeat, however.
Steve Hogarth, who replaced Fish in 1990, in
my opinion gave the band more soul. Their music today is more
moving even though there have been some obvious attempts to come up
with a top 40 hit.
You may not find their CDs in all music stores as
the band has been primarily selling their Music and Fan Articles
from
marillion.com. I highly recommend that you give them a
try. You can buy a sampler CD,
Crash Course - An Introduction to Marillion, on their site for
about $3.00 (a steal).
Track The Marillion CD: I have ordered 20
Marillion Sampler CDs and will distribute them to family, friends
and co-workers. The plan is for them to listen to the CD for a
week and then pass it on to someone who they think might enjoy the
music. I will set up a page where people can leave feedback
and I'll try to track where the CDs wind up at. Hopefully this
will be a fun project. At this time I am still trying to
figure out how to set up the tracking and web feedback. Once
done I will distribute the CDs. |
